According to Carrol Shelby, he once got stopped in his personal Cobra doing 190 mph down the Nevada freeway. Who would have thought that this story would eventually help him to auction it off at five million dollars?  Years later, that same old chicken farmer who got pulled for speeding did just that. He uses that story to sell his car at a world breaking record. See for yourself on a Youtube video of the Scottsdale, Arizona auction of 2007.

Shelby finally sold the only remaining original after his other car was destroyed.  This is the only remaining, personal, original, Carroll Shelby 1966 Cobra 427 Super Snake. It was sold at the 2007 Barrett Jackson auction for 5 million dollars and the buyer was car collector Ron Pratt of Chandler, Arizona.

Originally built as the “Cobra to end all Cobras,” the Super Snake featured in this video is remarkable in many ways. First of all, it was designed and built under the direction of Shelby himself as his own personal car. It still has its original date-coded big block engine and the original Girling BR & CR calipers. Let’s not forget the original differential oil cooler, pumps and the twin supercharged 427 with two Holley four-barrel carburetors.

Shelby boasts of 190 mph but Road & Track tested CSX 3015 in 1968 and the crew estimated that only 182 mph was possible. Either way, you are going to get pulled and the cops are going to lock you up. With its massive power, beautiful blue exterior, and impeccable lineage, this is most definitely the “Cobra to end all Cobras.”

Here’s what the chicken farmer himself had to say about it; "When I built this dual supercharged 427 Cobra in 1966, I wanted it to be the fastest, meanest car on the road,….Forty years later, it will still kick the tail of just about anything in the world. It's the fastest street legal Cobra I've ever owned."

Originally, the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake was a race car modified for street use. Shelby actually created two Super Snakes but the other one was sold to comedian Bill Cosby and then returned after just one drive. Cosby used the frightening experience as material on his comedy album.

Later, Harley E. Cluxton, a collector who also owned the Super Snake in this video, became the source who claims that Cosby's Super Snake was wrecked. He said it was a road accident where the driver was killed. Anybody smell a little mystery here? It wasn’t Cosby who was killed but the famed car was then destroyed and left the only remaining original up for auction in this video. Ok..take their word for it I guess. What’s five million dollars?

No one can argue that the AC/Shelby Cobra is the epitome of high-performance and class A cool. Shelby is a world-famous race driver who won LeMans for Aston Martin. Like he says "I wanted it to be the fastest, meanest car on the road." Who’s going to argue with that?

With almost 500 horsepower, the Cobra is "awesome, spellbinding." This, according to Car and Driver. "Snapping the throttle open at any speed jams the low setback into the small of your back. The car lunges, jostles, and belches thunder from the side pipes just below your ear." At five million bucks, it is worth checking out at the website.
