The SPF GT40 From Superformance Is Following In Some Awfully Big Footsteps

The Ford GT40 was a high-speed monster that dominated the racetracks back in the ‘60s. Auto fans back then fell in love with its sexy, aerodynamic lines and that love affair hasn't cooled off yet.

Personally, the low-slung good looks of the GT40 are enough to get my pulse racing and my heart pounding.

I recently read an article about the SPF GT40 from Superformance, one of the world's leading component car manufacturers. Turns out that this particular component car's serial numbers are actually continuation numbers from the revered Safir GT40 Spares LLC out of Milford, Ohio.

So what does that mean to a kit car buyer? Well, it means that it's the closest thing to the genuine, original article that you can buy. And considering that, even if one can be found, an original GT40 sells for several million dollars, having the next best thing is pretty cool.

According to Lance Stander, who's with the Superformance facility in Irvine, California, the SPF GT40 was designed directly from the Ford Advanced Vehicles blueprints of the car that beat the pants off Ferrari in the 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 Lemans 24-hour endurance races. In fact, its super rigid pressed steel chassis and steel roof spider are spot-on duplicates of the original. Nearly everything about the SPF GT40 is just like the original, even down to the Gurney bump on its roof.

Now, what about features that veer away from the original? The most notable differences include air conditioning, which the original GT40 obviously didn't have, and a modern braking system.

The SPF GT40, like all Superformance component cars, is a turnkey job. It's delivered without an engine or transmission, but everything else - including a gorgeous paint job - is assembled and ready to go. Now, you can use any kind of engine you want as long as it fits, but the Roush 427 is a motor that will really make this speed demon roar. In fact, it delivers an eye-popping 530 horsepower.

If a GT40 is the machine that throws you into a serious case of lust, but you simply don't want to build your replica from the ground up, then the SPF GT40 is just the ticket. This turnkey beauty, sans engine and tranny, costs around $69,000 and, if you want, Superformance can even help hook you up with a professional shop to install the drivetrain.

Imagine! A near-authentic GT40 parked in your driveway for less than $100,000! Life is indeed good.
