As we venture back into the era of the Depression, both literally and figuratively, the Bugatti Type 37 can be remembered as one of the most successful race cars. The original model, introduced at the Grand Prix of Lyon in 1924, used an evolution of the 3-valve overhead cam straight-8 engine. It later evolved into the 37 line which had an engine output of 80 to 90 hp. In those tougher times, alloy wheels were a novelty, as was the hollow front axle for reduced un-sprung weight. Manufacturers must have been doing something right because the chassis and body had been reused from previous years on the Type 37 and then it was re-fitted with a new 1.5 L straight-4 engine.
