Ultima GTR - Gobfuls of Chevrolet Horsepower (Video)

By James Martell
Tiff Needell: Now I thought I’ve tested just about everything the British sports car industry has on offer.  But an interesting wander around the home counties has revealed some interesting new metal.  Between them this Ultima GTR and Mackus Mantis have over 1000 horsepower.  So which shall I test first?

Ultima GTR Kitcar Officially Crowned the Fastest Production Car in the World (Video)

By Paul Ambrose
You heard right.  The Ultima GTR was officially crowned the fastest production car in the world in 2006. Of course, that wasn’t the end of the story. Having been independently timed around the Top Gear test track in 1 minute 12.8 seconds, it had only beat the top time previously set by a Gumpert Apollo. In fact, it beat the Gumpert by over four seconds but there was more work to be done. Soon she would go on to be the proud mother of an even greater progeny.

In 2008, the Ultima GTR kit was chosen as the platform for development of Maxximus Technologies, Inc.'s Maxximus G-Force. The "baby" of the Ultima GTR later took the crown on October 7, 2008 making a very proud mother out of the GTR herself.  In fact, the World Records Academy recently rated the G-Force as the world's fastest street-legal car and boy is her mother proud!

While the GTR can be ordered as a turnkey supercar, it is also available in kitcar and individual component form. A convertible version or "cousin" called the Ultima Can-Am is also produced in this series. As part of the GTR's gestation period, a lot of time was spent ensuring that it was also one of the easiest cars to construct in the world. This car is now the result of over 20 years of extensive research and development and is certainly something to behold.

Check it Out on Video

The acclaimed GTR can be seen rounding the turns on the video below. As you will see, every inch of the car has been meticulously researched, carefully fabricated by the factory or sourced from a specialist. Unlike other cars, the Ultima doesn't prescribe to the "parts-bin mentality" where components are scavenged from other models. The video will show parts from the suspension specialist company, Intrax, whcih carefully manufactures the dampers for the GTR and makes sure there are no shortcuts to quality.

Manufactured in Hinckley, Leicestershire, England, the design of the GTR is a mid-engined, rear wheel drive layout. It has a tubular steel space frame chassis and GRP bodywork. The Chevy small block V8 from American Speed is the factory recommended engine but kit builders are free to source and fit many engines and transmissions. Most recently, Ultima has focused their marketing efforts on a 640 bhp American Speed engine. This one is breaking records as we speak! Even with the passage of the generations, 0-100 mph in 5.3 seconds still makes the Ultima GTR the fastest mother on the planet.

Ultima Spyder Has the Looks and Brains to Match

By Paul Ambrose
Ok, it looks like a Formula One car but does it really drive like a Formula One? The answer is YES. The Ultima Spyder is not a kit car and there is one huge difference between this car and most of its competitors.  This car is for real.

On first glance, most people are quick to agree that the Ultima Spyder looks like it should be on the track with a pit crew crowding around it in red overalls. With its bubble canopy and tightly hunched shoulders, kids are quick to call it the real thing but adults always pause and then ask. “How does it handle?”

Before I give you the report card, let me preface these comments with a little bit of praise on the price tag.   You can actually get one of these cars in your driveway with owners papers to match for as little as £ 20. For the price of an ordinary kit-car, you are going to be scratching your head and wondering how you did it.  This is especially true after you take it out to the track.

The Ultima Spyder has often been praised by critics as the best handling car they have ever driven. Even on the first test run, you aren’t going to believe how easy this car is to drive. After one lap you will be taking it close to all its limits and feel perfectly safe in doing so.  The gear change is slick and the adjustable pedals are perfectly positioned for heeling and toeing. It’s like they knew what you wanted before you even knew yourself.

Very few cars even come comes close to the Ultima Spyder when it comes to performance.  The wide sills and uncluttered interior put you way down in the cockpit with a rush of air swooshing over the top of the car and leaving you in a remarkably quiet racing mode.  The Chevy 350 engine can be coupled to a Porsche six speed gearbox with so much of torque that it performs like a champion. Don’t give up an opportunity to take this car for a test drive someday as you will certainly se a new side of racing that you never experienced before. The Ultima Spyder has the looks and the brains to match.

The Ultima Can-Am: A Thinking Man's Supercar

By Marilyn Stokes
In the formidable tradition of British motorsports, the respected house of Ultima Sports Ltd. recently rolled out what may be the most smashing and versatile supercar yet in their stellar 25-year history: the Ultima Can-Am.   International media types were clambering over one another to get in and get their ears peeled back in a Can-Am ride as the Leicester, England supercar company introduced their newest kit car earlier this year.  A sleek and gorgeous performance auto, described by one ardent media correspondent as looking “as if it’s going 200mph standing still,” the Ultima Can-Am is also—dare I say it?—remarkably practical!

Mind-blowing performance is certainly built in, with power provided by a mid-mounted Chevrolet V8 Corvette engine mated to a Porsche transaxle.  With standard 300hp tune it’s enough to jet the Can-Am from 0-60mph in 4 seconds, before achieving a top speed of, well, let’s just say it’s way more than adequate, even for the Autobahn.  And the Can-Am offers optional LHD, along with a host of other standard USA regulations-compliant and driveability features that will make it road-handling perfection for cross-country travel in the United States, although not (legally, at least) to the level of exquisite terror available in a Can-Am on the Autobahn.

Hand-Built-- For You, Or By You

As now and future king of affordable and roadworthy super kit cars, the Ultima Can-Am can be ordered from the UK complete and hand-built for you by the renowned Ted and Richard Marlow and the other chaps at the Hinckley factory. But as the Marlow boys say, the quintessential Ultima kit car customer wants "intimate knowledge" of his dream car by fastening on every component, nut-by-nut, bolt-by-bolt.

And even I could do it!  According to the Ultima Sports Ltd. build info, the Can-Am is designed to be built by someone with only basic automotive knowledge and an elementary tool kit!  It makes me want to dust off the glossy pink tool kit I received for Christmas two years ago and get my husband to order up. I'd love to drive up to the supermarket (there is a cargo option), or the country club, while all eyes pop out and every jaw drops.  But, I'm fantasizing. The Ultima Can-Am is actually perfect for those more sophisticated male auto nuts of any age who want to make the locals stop and stare as they drive hither and yon, willy and nilly, in a car with the sensational appearance, heart and soul of a world-class racing machine--one that they built in their own garage!
