It was not engineered or modeled in a day instead it took quite sometime for the car to become legendary. Since the time it was first seen accelerating its way to success, it has made many racers and fanciers of sports car to drool over it. Even today, enthusiasts of sports cars, especially the olden ones, speak out this particular name whenever asked!

What made it so successful? What’s the story of this prowess?

This particular car shown in the video is owned by the Penn Brothers. The story is amusing, the video is touching and the car still looks as beautiful as it was in 1969 when first driven on the tracks. The Penn Brothers brought the car brand new and performed some hand-work over it to make it the best. Luckily they succeeded and the car earned them fame and respect.

They raced with it till 1976 and finally decided put up the old timer on blocks. The career of this Shelby had ended but love and passion towards it of Penn Brothers still remained the same. They have kept the car on the jack stands since then and it still is in a drivable condition.

While many antique car owners would lovingly sell their cars for the amount of money they can get, the Penn brothers wont. The car is attached to their memories and that is something that can’t be replaced. The Pen brothers are amongst the eight owners left in the country of original 427 Shelby. For enthusiasts of the Shelby Cobra, this video is a must to watch!

About the Penn Brother’s Cobra:

It has a front engine and is a rear wheel drive. It can literally go to 60 mph within 4 seconds and then back to 0 within a 14 seconds session. The car doesn’t have the original magnesium rims. They have been replaced with the aluminum ones supplied by the factory. The has only been driven 5285 miles out of which 3000 miles were done on the street by the Penn brothers enjoying their most amusing investment of all time. Not just for them but for all Shelby lovers this car is a bonnie!

About the Cobra in General:

Initially when Carroll Shelby started making sports cars, he first designed an AC ACE Cobra which showed some severe drawbacks and there were several changes made periodically to overcome those faults. Initially a 6 cylinder engine was used which was later on replaced by a Ford V8. In those days, the tracks were ruled by Corvette Grand Sports Corvettes and to go head on with them, Cobra needed some major changes. Hence our beloved 427 Shelby Cobra was created! With 355 BHP Horsepower at 5400 RPM and a compact body, the 427 Shelby Cobra outclassed even the most sophisticated cars of those times.

Again, it was the conjunction of Ford and Shelby that brought us this car. Not only did it comfort the eyes of spectators on the tracks, it also attracted huge attention from the elite class. Even today, this car is considered as one of the most sacred ones when it comes to mid age sports cars. Although it’s not very comfortable to drive on streets but that’s because it was never meant to be a road car. Instead, it was always a road car and if you are a fan of Cobra Shelby then you wouldn’t mind it either.

It was last seen commercially in 2007 at the 2007 RM Auctions and was priced between $750,000 to $850,000. The one that was in the auction was a neat car with no hood scoops. There were no modifications to the car as well however it did undergo a restoration process. Not to forget, that is the beauty of this car! It doesn’t need any modifications and its perfect the way it is.

Periodically, the 427 Cobra Shelby went under various modifications and changes however the exterior of the car remained the same. It never lost its magical touch and always kept aspiring people for it. It was not sold in the auction and hence still remains with the same owner.

The last 427 Cobra was built in 1967 and sold in 1968 marking the end to the 427 Shelby Cobra era. However, the legacy still carried on and will always. It was a masterpiece and even today catches the eye of many. Today, on one hand we have cars like the Mustang GT500, etc. on the other hand we have cars like the 1967 427 Cobra Shelby who have earned the glory they deserved.
