About
Ferrari 250 GTO is from the early 1960’s but it still gives sleepless nights to some folks!
Made from 1962 to 1964, only 39 Ferrari 250 GTO’s were ever produced. And since it was very exclusive it was also very expensive!
How expensive?
If this car was sold now a days, it would cost around $10,000,000! That expensive! Obviously mortals like us can only adore it from far away.
Well, not really!
The individuals at the 250 GTO Replica Register pay their homage to this classic car by building replicas of Ferraris greatest car!
When it was initially released, the Ferrari 250 GTO managed to capture hearts and minds universally. But its appeal has stood the test of time. It is still considered one of the best looking cars to be produced…ever!
GTO or Grand Touring Homologated is considered to be one of the most elaborate hoaxes Ferrari managed to carry out. By using GTO in the cars name, Ferrari managed to convince FAI (international body for sanctioning races) that this car was a version of Ferraris mass produced 250 GT. But it was so much more than that! According to some of the most prominent sports writers, the 250 GTO was among the best racing cars ever.
So it’s not so much of a surprise that there are many people just dying to get their hands on this piece of history. But the fact that only 39 were ever produced does put a damper on things!
The 250 GTO Replica Register, also known as GTORR, was started several years ago by Terry Watson. Terry saw the need for collaboration between owners of rare vehicles, especially in Manhattan Beach, California area. He managed to develop a rather large gathering of car lovers who shared, along with a passion for old cars, information about maintenance, registration and insurance.
Terry Watson has one of the most beautiful Alpha One GTO replicas ever seen. This somewhat explains his obsession with speedy antiques. But Terry relinquished the stewardship to GTORR after publishing 3 successful newsletters.
The reason?
His day job.
He is a rocket scientist by day. Really!!
So anyways, now the 250 GTO Replica Register is in a transitory phase. The site editors are about to give the website a brand new look and are inviting suggestions from the large member presence. The newsletters published by Terry Watson are available as a reprint and depending on how the Register develops, might be made available online.
The GTO replicas, Z based ones, were first produced by Barry Goldstein of Eagle Engineering. He later handed his GTO tooling to Joe Alphabet who was famous for dealing in fine Italian machinery. But since he wanted to keep a good working relationship with Ferrari he had to sell his side business.
The folks at Ferrari tend to be a little too possessive about their merchandise. No matter how fine a replica you build, you will not be able to find a Ferrari logo or badge.
Some outstanding 250 GTO replicas have been built on Datsun Z platforms and Marauder tube frames. Some GTO enthusiasts have even managed to build one on 944 Porsche platforms. In fact before Ferraris crackdown began, a small cottage industry was working, efficiently creating GTO replica kits modifying existing 250 GTs. Just imagine a Ferrari working undercover as another Ferrari!
The Gallery at the Registers website is filled with amazing examples of hard work. So be sure to check out the 250 GTO Replica Register. And if you are a GTO lover don’t forget to register.
