In 2001 Diego Grullon had a dream. The Dominican Republic native had a passion for the powerful performance and style of the GT race and street cars, but he realized he might never be able to own one. So, he set out to design a true super car that guys like himself could afford. After years of research and consultation with top Trans Am and GT body and chassis builders, he partnered with expert materials artisan and craftsman, Juan Ovalle, to actually produce his vision. The rest is history; the duo of Gullon and Ovalle formed DDR Motorsports, and came out with what has been called the absolute "best super car" by many kit car reviewers. It is the DDR/SP4, which can be completed by home build for under $30,000.
The sturdy and popular Toyota MR-2 SW20 Turbo, available from 1990 through 1996, was the chosen platform for the development of the dynamic SP4, whose compelling appearance and impressive performance has already landed it a solid niche in the spectrum of American kit super cars. All sports car in primary concept, the SP4 has a sleek and exotic tubular steel chassis, vibrant wing doors, and six-point roll cage. Its interior design offers luxurious comfort, with special bucket-type seats, Nordskog performance gauges, and space to include a top-of-the-line audio system.
Both Kit and Donor Components Needed
The home builder will need DDR kit parts and also Toyota MR-2 components in order to complete his SP4 super car. Parts Offered with the DDR SP4 Kit include a complete tubular chassis with interior cockpit aluminum panels, unpainted body panels, front windscreen, side and rear lexan glass, projector head lamps, turn signals and lights, plus custom fuel tank and associated hardware. Also available are the coolant system, dash assembly, clutch, brake and gas pedal assembly with triple master cylinder, brakes, wiring harness and interior carpeting.
Donor parts required will be primarily from the Toyota MR-2. These include: complete engine with exhaust, transmission, axles, shifter linkage, computer and wiring harness, front and rear brake rotors, calipers and hubs, rack and pinion steering with column and steering wheel, radiator assembly with fans, shroud, and catch can, plus a wiper motor, all components easily available from 1990-1996 MR-2s. The rear view mirror will come from a 1992-2002 Mazda RX-7 as the only exception.
Ferdinand Porsche once said "I set out to find a true sports car, but since I didn't find it I decided to build it." Diego Gullon wanted the "best super car" but at an affordable price. So he formed DDR Motorsports and built the DDR SP4 kit car-- for everybody just like himself.
