The 59th Annual Grand National Roadster Show Once Again Lived Up To Its "Grand" Reputation

The Grand National Roadster Show has long been considered the "granddaddy of roadster shows." And the 2008 event definitely lived up to that billing. Held January 25th through the 27th in Pomona, California, this year celebrated the 59th annual GNRS.

While I knew that it's always been the first indoor custom car show of each new year, I was fascinated to learn that the Grand National Roadster Show is actually the longest running indoor car show in the world.

This year, the folks at the GNRS put the spotlight on Troy Trepanier of Rad Rides out of Manteno, Illinois by naming him "Builder of the Year." Here's what Trepanier had to say when presented this highly coveted award. "In my opinion, recognizing me and my team means the industry is recognizing the newer, younger generation of hot rodding. And while I've by no means accomplished what the legends who came before me have, I certainly aspire to their greatness and am honored to accept this award on behalf of the new generation of hot rodders." Well said, Troy, well said.

There was a wealth of crowd-pleasing exhibits, awards and events throughout this three-day show, including a 50th anniversary tribute to the Ala Kart, the two-time winner of the America's Most Beautiful Roadster trophy. The legendary builder Roy Brizio had the pleasure of unveiling this recently restored beauty.

One really interesting new exhibit that debuted at this year's GNRS was the Build-a-Rod exhibit. This innovative feature allowed show attendees to watch a 1933 Ford Roadster being built from the ground up.

Named Outstanding Overall Custom at this show was a drop-dead gorgeous red 1954 Chevrolet ‘Vette owned by G. Paul Powell. And the Outstanding Overall Rod award went to a very cool silver 1932 Ford Roadster.

Another crowd-favorite was the Chip Foose Design Excellence Award. Each year, this award is presented by Foose himself to the vehicle most honoring the beauty and originality of creative automotive design. This year's winner was Michael Chetcuti for his 1927 black Ford Roadster.

The highlight of the show was the big announcement of this year's winner of the America's Most Beautiful Roadster award. Past winners have included Boyd Coddington and Chip Foose. Pretty elite company, if you ask me. This year, the 9 ½ foot tall trophy went to a glorious gold 1932 Ford Roadster owned by Rudy Necoechea. Congrats, Rudy!

I'd really like to know if any of our Kit Car Connection community made it out to Pomona for this amazing event. If so, let us hear your impressions of the cars that won and those that didn't. And if you have photos, be sure to share them with us.
